10. “All I Want For Christmas Is You” by Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is an American actress, record producer, songwriter, and singer. She gained her fame with the release of her album, “Vision of Love” in 1990. This album gained her four chart-topping singles in the U.S. and began a string of successful albums. Carey and Boyz II Men were on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a record-breaking 16 weeks in 1995 and 1996. The song that kept them on the top was, “One Sweet Day” and still holds the record for the longest running number one song in United States history.

Carey was scheduled to sing a concert in Toronto, Canada which was her first public performance since she left her fiancĂ©, James Packer. She was 90 minutes late for this free concert wearing a red, floor-length gown and sang to hundreds of enthusiastic fans. One of the two songs she sang was, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” which her fans sang along too. Carey wrote and produced this song with Walter Afanasieff and released it in 1994. The lyrics declare the narrator does not care about Christmas lights or presents, she just wants Christmas to be with the one she loved.

9. “Starving” by Hailee Steinfeld & Grey and Zedd

Hailee Steinfeld was born in 1996 and is an American singer and model. She gained her fame when she portrayed, Mattie Ross in “True Grit” in 2010. She later sang, “Flashlight” in “Pitch Perfect 2” in 2015 and released a cover version which she later signed to Republic Records. She also performed with the duo, Grey which is an American music duo consisting of brothers Kyle and Michael Trewartha.

Steinfeld and Grey produced “Starving” which featured production work from DJ Zedd, a Russian-German. “Starving” is about knowing someone or getting to know that someone to a point where they give you a whole new outlook on yourself. It tells how someone didn’t realize their life could be different until this new person comes into their life.

8. “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots

Twenty One Pilots is an American duo who started up in Columbus, Ohio in 2009. Their lead vocalist and keyboardist, Tyler Joseph and former members Chris Salih and Nick Thomas rose to fame in the mid-2010s. They created two self-released albums, “Twenty One Pilots” and “Regional at Best” before they signed with Fueled by Ramen in 2012. In April of 2012, they performed at a sold-out show where they announced they had signed to Atlantic Records.

“Heathens” was written and recorded as the lead single for the motion picture soundtrack, “Suicide Squad”. It was written by Tyler Joseph and Mike Elizondo. “Heathens” reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 tying with their other high ranking single as their highest ranking singles to date. They received three Grammy nominations with this single; Best Rock Song, Best Song Written for Visual Media, and Best Rock Performance.

7. “Don’t Wanna Know” by Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar

Maroon 5 is an American pop rock from Los Angeles, California. Before they became the Maroon 5, the original four members, Levine, Carmichael, Madden, and Dusick had been a band known as Kara’s Flowers while the four were still in high school. They released a couple of albums and received a tepid response, so parted ways while the four attended college. In 2001, they changed their image and added Valentine as their guitarist and pursued a new direction as the Maroon 5.

“Don’t Wanna Know” was released in October of 2016 and reached the top 10 songs in 15 different countries. In Australia and Italy it was certified Gold. This song has a distinctly non-Maroon 5 sound; it has a breezy, lighthearted spin on drinking to forget. It is also about dancing to dull pain from losing your one true connection.

6. “Let Me Love You” by DJ Snake

DJ Snake is a Grammy-nominated artist and producer and debuted in the international scene with their single, “Bird Machine” and “Turn Down for What”. DJ Snake had been working in collaboration with Diplo that had been scheduled to debut in 2014 and was eventually released in 2015. In April of 2014, DJ Snake was labeled as an “artist to watch”. He produced an album for Lady Gaga which earned him a Grammy nomination and later co-produced, “Government Hooker” which was voted best song by Lady Gaga fans.

“Let Me Love You” was recorded by French producer DJ Snake and was his third single from his album, “Encore”. This song was released in August of 2016 and the music video for it was released in November of 2016 on You Tube. The song made it to number 12 in the United States and to number two in the United Kingdom. It stayed at number two for five weeks.

5. “Black Beatles” by Rae Sremmurd

Rae Sremmurd is an American hip-hop duo from Atlanta, Georgia. They are two brothers who debuted in 2015 with their album, “SremmLife”. They named their band after their home label, “EarDrummers” which they spelled each word backward. They are best known for their 2016, US Billboard Hot 100 hit, “Black Beatles”. The brothers worked together several years under “Dem Outta St8 Boyz” and produced music playing at local parties and at home.

“Black Beatles” was released in September of 2016 as their third single from their album, “SremmLife 2”. It features vocals from the American Rapper, Gucci Mane. The song is one of the last tracks and is the major reason for why the album was delayed from its June release date.

4. “Side To Side” by Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande is an American actress and singer. She started out on Broadway before becoming Cat Valentine on Nickelodeon’s TV series Victorious in 2009. She has also appeared in other film roles and TV shows and loaned her voice to animated television and films. Her music career began with her soundtrack, “Music” in 2011. Her second studio album, “My Everything” reached number 1 in the US and charted in the top 10 in various other countries.

“Side To Side” was released in August 2016 as the third single from her album, “Dangerous Woman”. The song features vocals from rapper, Nicki Minaj and was produced by Max Martin and Ilya Salmanzadeh. It peaked at number 4 on both the UK and US Billboard Hot 100 and became her first top-five single from the album.

3. “24K Magic” by Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars was born in 1985 and is an American choreographer, record producer, instrumentalist, and songwriter. He was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii in a family of musicians. He started his music career at a young age by performing in various venues in his hometown. His debut album, “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” released in 2010 included three Billboard Hot 100 singles and his second album; “Unorthodox Jukebox” reached number 1 in the U.S. To date, Mars has sold over 100 million singles and albums across the globe.

“24K Magic” known as twenty-four karat magic, is from Mars third album. It was released in November of 2016 and is the first song not recorded by Mars under The Smeezingtons. Mars said he wanted to sing more than he had on previous albums. He states “Music to me, is all about feeling” so the lyrics and beats and new drum sounds are all expressed in this music.

2. “Closer” by The Chainsmokers

The Chainsmokers are an American DJ duo consisting of Alex Pall and Andrew Taggart. With their 2014 song, “Selfie”, The Chainsmokers reached number 16 on the US Billboard Hot 100, number 3 in Australia and number 11 in the UK. Their single, “Roses” reached the top 10, and “Don’t Let Me Down” became their first top 5 single. They were initially made up of Pall and former DJ Rhett Bixier and were formed under the management of Adam Alpert in New York City.

“Closer” features American singer Halsey. Andrew Taggart, half of The Chainsmokers provided his vocals for this song. It was released in July of 2016 and was written by Taggart, Frangipane, Slade, King, and Kennett. In the US this song reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for twelve straight weeks.

The Weeknd is a pop-rock band from London, Ontario who made their first performance in 1998. Andrea Wasse is the chief songwriter and Link C is the programmer and they were in high school when they first started the band with Lorien Jones and Mike Clive. Their second performance was an opening for just a little over 500 people in Southwestern Ontario. They were said to have a distinct new wave feel due to a synthesizer they used on their early albums. They later transformed their sound towards a harder rock edge.

“Starboy” is from the third album by The Weeknd and was released in November 2016. The album features guests from Daft Punk, Lana Del Rey, and Kendrick Lamar. After The Weekends commercial success from, “Beauty Behind the Madness” in 2015 it hinted at the release of their third album. The Weeknd promoted their album by singing, “Starboy” on the 42nd season premiere of Saturday Night Live.
